Laura Osburn
 

I am a qualitative researcher with over 10 years of experience helping organizations and teams identify and overcome challenges with technology, organizational processes, and work practices. With a background in communication and organizational studies, I have expertise in architecture/engineering/construction/owner (AECO) collaborative work, narratives and persuasion, new technology use and implementation, and smart building cybersecurity. I am adept in qualitative methods including ethnography, interviews, case studies, focus groups, and surveys. I have authored and co-authored how-to guides, industry reports, white papers, peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and online magazine articles. I have also co-edited and managed book projects.

Research Scientist

I am currently employed as a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Construction Management at the University of Washington. There, I co-lead the Cybersecurity in the Built Environment (Cyber-BE) lab, and the  Communication, Technology and Organizational Practices (CTOP) lab. I have worked on both academic and applied research projects funded by the National Science Foundation, General Services Administration, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, University of Washington, Sound Transit, Skanska Inc., the Port of Seattle, King County Metro, the American Institute of Architects, Washington State Department of Labor & Industry, and the Charles Pankow Foundation.  

Consultant

As a consultant, I offer insights and recommendations to help businesses and teams manage technology change, business operations, and team collaboration. I also organize and work with other consultants on larger projects under the name, The Osburn Group, which has developed and delivered training materials for the General Services Administration.
